Our Story
Greater Faith Tabernacle Baptist Church of Stamford, CT, was officially incorporated in April 1962 under the visionary leadership of the late Reverend Dr. William Baxter. The avenue bearing his name, Baxter Avenue, serves as a lasting tribute to his substantial contributions to the city of Stamford.
This church emerged as a spiritual offspring of the Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church on Grove Street. The founding was in response to differences that couldn't be reconciled, but it blossomed into a unique community under the guidance of Reverend Baxter, who had also founded the Faith Tabernacle Church.
The present church building, a symbol of faith and unity, was constructed in 1962 on land generously donated by the late Mrs. Alice Turrentine, a revered member of our community and a devoted resident of Stamford.
Throughout our history, our faith community has been a diverse congregation of people of color, coming together to meet shared spiritual and communal needs. We continue to embrace diversity as we believe in the universal body of Christ. Our faith community remains open and affirming, recognizing the inherent value of every individual, created in the image of God and transformed by the love of Jesus Christ.
As a Missionary Baptist fellowship, we celebrate our diversity and respect the various faiths and beliefs held by our congregation. In terms of interpersonal relationships, our church emphasizes unity under one Head and one Lord. We practice one Faith and share one baptism, united by our covenant with each other. We hold in high regard the rights and dignity of every individual within our community.
Our motto is the love of God, and our theme is the love of humanity. Our ultimate goal is to love one another, and we embrace peace with unity as our guiding principle.
Today, we are honored to be led by our interim Paster, Reverend Winton M. Hill, who continues to guide and inspire our congregation with wisdom and faith.
